London 2012 Paralympics - Final Day Report

The final day of racing for the Sonar class at the Paralympic Games had to be cancelled today due to the lack of wind, an issue which had plagued the regatta for most of the week. The Irish sailors, John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello finished 11th overall. They had been hoping to leave the regatta on a high today, repeating their second place performance from earlier in the week but unfortunately it was not to be. Although they will not come home with a medal this year, John has made the history books by competing in what was his 10th Paralympics, a record for any Irish person competing at either the Olympics or Paralympics. This was a Paralympic debut for both Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello.

John Twomey commented “We’re disappointed we didn’t get to race today but it’s been a great regatta and a wonderful Paralympics“.

London 2012 Paralympics - Day 5 Report

The Sonar class had a further three races today in Portland Harbour in what was the penultimate day for the sailors at the Paralympic Games. A 13th, 10th and 10th saw the Irish team; John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello move down to 11th overall. There will be one final race tomorrow but the gold medal has already been decided. Udo Hessels, Marcel ven de Veen and Mischa Rossen from the Netherlands are 20 points in the lead so it will be impossible for any of the other teams to beat them with only one more race left in the regatta. The silver and bronze are still to play for as only two points separate second place from fifth place but unfortunately the Irish trio are not in contention.
